OperaWorks’ three-level Teacher Certification program is designed to support voice teachers in introducing OperaWorks’ proven methods for developing “the complete performer” into studio teaching, opera workshops, or production rehearsals. Teachers will develop new teaching skills through incorporating techniques of improvisation, learning/teaching styles, physical theatre, and the art of positive feedback into studio practice.

Certification Levels

All levels of this program are offered in tandem with OperaWorks’ performance programs to allow for immediate practical application of the techniques in a lab setting. Each level is taught in a two-week period. All levels are available in each program.

Level I

Level I of our certification program offers an introduction to OperaWorks’ methods for teachers, taking place through observation and participation of OperaWorks’ wide range of classes and activities designed to holistically develop the complete performer. These include:

  • Improvisation
  • Performance techniques
  • Visualization
  • Yoga
  • Career planning
  • Marketing skills
  • Physical theatre

Daily seminars provide specific tools, techniques, and materials that can be used in lessons, classes, workshops, and rehearsals. To apply these concepts to the participant’s own teaching style, Teaching Labs are scheduled with singers, followed by OperaWorks faculty observations and recommendations.

Level II

Level II teachers build on their Level I experience by delving into the psychology of working with singers and applying those skills in Teaching Labs with singers. All teachers will be actively involved in a wide range of classes and activities designed to holistically develop the complete performer. Teachers may also choose to perform in the concluding world premiere based on a current social issue.

Level III

Level III teachers selected for this program build on their Levels I and II experiences through seminars on the effective implementation of these new concepts in academia, including sample curricula, teaching materials, and negotiating skills. Teaching Labs are expanded to focus on specific goals of each teachers in the program. Participation in complete performer classes or rehearsals as assistant teachers are additional options.
