The original three-act opera Pride & Promiscuity brings together a colorful assortment of characters from the Shady Willow Pines Mobile Home Park, cast and crew from the award-winning soap opera "Confessions" and a...well...almost GP-rated Swinger Party Pad.  The intrigue and hilarity is captured by the lens and commentary of Brianna, TV's wicked celebrity gossip host of her show "Soap's UP!"

Runaways, pimps, human traffickers, the Coast Guard, and a Feng Shui home decorator are juxtaposed in a story of hope, courage, pain, and absurdity.
 
 

"I CANDY" (2008)

"I CANDY" takes place in the high stakes world of Las Vegas, where the Candy Casino invites clients to risk all or nothing! Rival mob casino owners lure their players into wild and fantastic games of chance. What is the ultimate goal for high rollers, exotic dancers, and a man who is known as Lord Licorice Whip? And who gambles everything to make a dream come true?

"MY OTHER, MY SELVES" (2007)

My Other, My Selves" opens the door to "Andrew" who suffers from multiple personality disorder. This uncharacteristically dramatic opera featured 30 extraordinary singers who took us to The Internet, a Speed-Dating session, a Beauty Pageant, and a Jail cell -- all as parts of Andrew's mind.

"TREY VEET, DETECTIVE and the CURSE ON THE HIGH C'S" (2006)

Yet another impossible plot found its way into OperaWorks' ever-expanding repertoire of original operas! Curse on the High C's began with a Detective's fateful meeting with a Femme Fatale.  In their search to end the curse, they encountered a vengeful lover, cheerleaders gone bad, and a pianist who just wouldn't die!

"APRIL FOOLS" (2005)

Three babies are born in three unconventional places on April Fools Day:   at a high school reunion, a wedding reception, and the "Labor of Love" Birthing Center.  As the HS reunion couples realize their children were all born on the same day, we flash back to the wedding reception where we discover that the Best Man had a fling with the mother of the groom, the bride is pregnant with another man's baby, the "Labor of Love" Birthing Center is staffed with a parolee doing community service, and today is the nursing intern's first day on the job.
 

"ARIA STAYIN' ALIVE?!" (2004)

OperaWorks' 2004 original opera featured a plot filled with lots of intrigue, and many colorful characters...
...and some off-color ones...
including a flamboyant funeral director...
a narcoleptic bodyguard...
a hysterical IRS agent...
and a mailman with an "interesting" hobby.

"ROYAL FLUSH" (2003)

This original opera incorporated well-known and well-loved opera pieces and improvised dialogue into a wacky plot that involved none other than...

"NUPTIALEDOPHOBIA: A Minister's Nightmare" (2002)

"NUPTIALEDOPHOBIA: A Minister's Nightmare" is the story of a minister who can no longer perform marriage vows without catastrophic consequences, the work featured treacherous demons, desperate brides, lost grooms, and a host of other memorable characters.

"ARIA M'DADDY?" (2001)

"ARIA M'DADDY" centers around a dysfunctional family reunion in which the patriarch is shot by misguided participants in a Murder Mystery game. The three act opera featured a cleptomaniac aunt, cross-breeding cousins, a disgraceful Dr. Love and his perennially pregnant nurses, and the ever popular Geri Springer, host of her very own cable TV home decorating show.

Some audience members found this show educational, although that was not the intent...

"OPERAWORKS IN PURGATORY" (2000)

What happens when God and Satan make a bet on a national TV?  Jay Wadd, the popular host of the "Jay Talk" talk show, becomes the target of a wager between God (as a homeless activist) and Satan (as a female philanthropist).  Jay is whisked away to the cruise ship SS Purgatory where he is sorely tempted by an accomplice of Satan. But, before he succumbs to her ways, he is tranported to a cable TV psychic show where he is saved by God.

"BRING OUT THE BRIDE" (1998)

As she reaches the altar to marry her fiance', a bride is mistakenly arrested by the INS and taken to jail.

This opera is the story of her wedding day: from the church, to jail, to court. "BRING OUT THE BRIDE" was populated with double agents, hookers, inept lawyers and a rodeo-style judge.  The action runs the gamut from a fight in the jail between the bride and hookers, to the courtroom with dueling lawyers, and ending with a beautiful reunion of the bride and groom.

The FlipSide Series:  When Good Opera Goes Bad

The Flip Side Series presents a wild juxtaposition of classic opera with the hilarious. These performances balance well-known works as they were meant to be performed with irreverent send-ups that include costume snafus, translation goofs, unintended plot twists, and incongruent operatic medleys.

Originally conceived as an opera performance in which anything that could go wrong, does, FLIP SIDE premiered as the Los Angeles Times "Pick of the Week."
